“Trust in the LORD” Psalm 37:3, 5, 40


INTRODUCTION

1. The word “Trust” is found in the Book of Psalms frequently

2. It is used in a number of ways:

a) As a statement of faith

b) As a word of encouragement

i) To oneself

ii) To others

c) As a word of instruction from God

 

THE USE OF THE WORD “TRUST” IN PSALM 37

1. Trust in the LORD, and do good;

Dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness Psalm 37:3

2. Commit your way to the LORD,

Trust also in Him,

And He shall bring it to pass. Psalm 37:5

3. And the LORD shall help them and deliver them;

He shall deliver them from the wicked,

And save them,

Because they trust in Him Psalm 37:40

 

THE BATTLES THAT WE MUST FIGHT AND WIN

1. Against “Little Faith” Matthew 8:26

2. Against “Doubt” Matthew 14:31

3. Against Unbelief Matthew 17:20

 

LEARN HOW TO TRUST THE LORD

Trust in the LORD, and do good;

Dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness Psalm 37:3

1. Let there be a Trust in the Lord

a) Faith in the Lord

b) Focus on Him

2. Remember what God has taught:

a) Do not fret Psalm 37:1

b) Cease from anger Psalm 37:8

3. Doing what is Good

a) The wicked will continue to do evil things

b) The Upright will do what is good

i) In God’s sight

ii) According to the Scriptures

4. Dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness

a) Dwell in the land

i) Even if there is a famine

ii) Even in difficult times

iii) Lesson from Abraham Genesis 12

iv) Lesson from Isaac Genesis 26

b) Feed on His faithfulness

i) Feed on God’s word

ii) Feed on God’s faithful dealings

 

LEARN HOW TO COMMIT ALL THINGS TO GOD

Commit your way to the LORD,

Trust also in Him,

And He shall bring it to pass. Psalm 37:5

1. Committing our ways to God

a) Unknown to us

b) But fully known by God

2. Trusting God to bring to pass

`5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart,

And lean not on your own understanding;

6 In all your ways acknowledge Him,

And He shall direct your paths. Proverbs 3:5-6

a) Trust must be “with all the heart”

b) Do not choose our own understanding

c) Acknowledge the Lord in all we do

d) He will direct our paths

 

LEARN HOW TO BELIEVE IN THE LORD FULLY

And the LORD shall help them and deliver them;

He shall deliver them from the wicked,

And save them,

Because they trust in Him Psalm 37:40

1. The LORD’s commitment to the Upright

a) He will help

b) He will deliver

c) He will save

2. Because they Trust in the LORD

a) Our Trust Matters

b) Our Trust would not be in vain

c) Our Trust would result in the Lord’s blessings

 

CONCLUSION

1. Encouragement to Trust in times of fear

3 Whenever I am afraid,

I will trust in You.

4 In God (I will praise His word),

In God I have put my trust;

I will not fear.

What can flesh do to me? Psalm 56:3-4

2. Exercising Trust in the Lord

And in that day you will say:

“O LORD, I will praise You;

Though You were angry with me,

Your anger is turned away, and You comfort me.

2 Behold, God is my salvation,

I will trust and not be afraid;

‘For YAH, the LORD, is my strength and song;

He also has become my salvation.’ ”

3 Therefore with joy you will draw water

From the wells of salvation. Isaiah 12:1-3
