History
Our Beginning
- Upon receiving a Macedonian call from Myanmar, Rev. Dr. Charles Tan, senior pastor of Bethany Independent-Presbyterian Church (Singapore), initiated the mission works in Yangon in 1995.
- Since then, Bethany Independent Presbyterian Church (Myanmar) has engaged in a variety of ministry, such as Theological Educations, Orphanage centers, and other social development works across the country.
Our Brief History
- In 1973, Bethany Independent-Presbyterian Church (Singapore) began its ministry in Singapore as a church and as a charity. Ever since, the International Moderator of Independent-Presbyterian Churches has always been Rev Dr Charles Tan, the founder of the IPC Family. The LORD has blessed Bethany IPC (Singapore) greatly, and she thus has enlarged her tent, reaching
- South India 1989
- Western Australia 1994
- Myanmar 1995
- Kenya 2019
- North East India 2021
- In 1995, the Bethany IPC (Singapore) was invited to partner with the Independent Church of Myanmar (ICM), and the LORD through the donations of Rev Dr Charles Tan and Bethany IPC, Singapore provided three pieces of land for mission works which Rev Dr Charles Tan diligently led:
- Bethany Theological Seminary at 112/B Upper Mingyi Road, East Ywama, Insein, was established in 1996;
- The Teachers Quarters at 324 Mingyi Road, East Ywama, Insein, was dedicated in 1997;
- Bethany Children Development Centre at 10/226 Padauk Myaing St., Sannmyo Ward, Kalay, was inaugurated in 1999. It received direct support from Bethany IPC Singapore.
- In 2001, the ICM adopted the name IPC; hence, renaming itself as the Independent Presbyterian Church of Myanmar (IPCM).
- In 2017, the IPCM split into two groups, namely, IPCM and Bethany Independent-Presbyterian Church (Myanmar). The Separation Agreement was signed by leaders of both churches in 2018, dividing among themselves the Assets and Properties of the IPCM.
- February 18, 2017, the Bethany IPC (Myanmar) decided to follow through the direction of Bethany IPC (Singapore) with reference to church properties and leadership. However, in August, 2019, a group of people led by Rev Dr Pa Sang, turned away from the leadership of Bethany IPC, Singapore.
- In September 19, 2019, the remnants of Bethany IPC, Myanmar also known as Bethany Myanmar led by Rev Dr Tomas Zatel sent their representatives to Yangon and held the first National Executive Committee (NEC), in line with the International IPC body. During this NEC meeting, our vision and mission, and constitution, were adopted.
- In October 8, 2019, the Bethany IPC (Singapore) sent us a certificate of recognition, declaring us as her one and only associate church in Myanmar, and as such, one of the churches of IPC across the globe – Singapore, India, Australia, Myanmar, and Kenya.
- September 19 – the Anniversary Day of Bethany Myanmar – is a celebration, not merely of a journey we have gone through, but chiefly of the birth of a church locally solidified and internationally recognized among the IPC Family.
- We truly thank God for the ministries entrusted to us:
- Bethany Theological Seminary (1996)
- Bethany Myanmar Limited (2019)
- Bethany Myanmar Literature (2020)
- Bethany Hope Centre (2022)
- House of Hope (2024)
- Churches (15 churches in total as of 2025)
