INTRODUCTION

1. The Imagery of Light

a) This was used to distinguish it from Darkness

b) Light naturally dispels Darkness

2. The Imagery of Light

a) Closely associated with the Lord Jesus

b) The Gospel of John uses the word “Light” vigorously

 

THE GIVER OF LIGHT

1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

2 He was in the beginning with God.

3 All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.

4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.

5 And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it

6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.

7 This man came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all through him might believe.

8 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.

9 That was the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world. John 1:1-9

1. The Lord Jesus presented

a) As the Word

b) As Deity

c) As Co-creator

d) As life-giver

e) As light-giver

2. The Struggle against the Light

a) Darkness struggled to apprehend the Light

b) Darkness could not comprehend how it can contain the Light

c) The Lord Jesus is the True Light

 

APPLICATIONS OF THE LIGHT IN MINISTRY

1. Following “The Light of the world” Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world.

He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” John 8:12

a) Declaration

“I am the light of the world”

b) Invitation

i) To follow the Lord Jesus

ii) To learn how to walk in the light

c) Assurance

i) The follower will not walk in darkness

ii) He will have the light of life

2. Consciousness of being the Light of the world

4 “I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work.

5 As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” John 9:4-5

a) To work diligently while it is day

b) Being the Light of the world consciously

 

SENT TO BE A LIGHT INTO THE WORLD

44 Then Jesus cried out and said, “He who believes in Me, believes not in Me but in Him who sent Me.

45 And he who sees Me sees Him who sent Me.

46 I have come as a light into the world, that whoever believes in Me should not abide in darkness. John 12:44-46

1. To all who professed faith in the Lord

a) He who believes in the Lord Jesus

b) He is, in fact, believing in God who sent Him

2. The Lord Jesus was sent

a) To be a light into the world

b) Whoever believes in Him should not abide in darkness

 

THE GREAT LIGHT

15 “The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,

By the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan,

Galilee of the Gentiles: 16 The people who sat in darkness have seen a great light,

And upon those who sat in the region and shadow of death

Light has dawned.” 17 From that time Jesus began to preach and to say,

“Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” Matthew 4:15-17

1. Darkness need not reign

2. There is no need to sit in the region and shadow of death

3. A great Light has come

4. Light has dawned
