a) He was in the Temple in the morning

A DISTURBING SCENARIO

1. The scribes and Pharisees barged in and disrupted the teaching session

a) Deliberately

b) Dragging a woman caught in adultery John 8:3

c) A dilemma for the woman!

2. The challenge of the scribes and Pharisees

4 They said to Him, “Teacher, this woman was caught in adultery, in the very act.

5 Now Moses, in the law, commanded us that such should be stoned. But what do You say?”

6 This they said, testing Him, that they might have something of which to accuse Him.

But Jesus stooped down and wrote on the ground with His finger, as though He did not hear. John 8:4-6

a) They quoted the law of Moses

b) The law suggested “stoning”

c) What was the opinion of the Lord Jesus?

3. The answer of the Lord Jesus

7 So when they continued asking Him, He raised Himself up and said to them,

“He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first.”

8 And again He stooped down and wrote on the ground.

9 Then those who heard it, being convicted by their conscience, went out one by one,

beginning with the oldest even to the last. And Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst. John 8:7-9

a) Who is without sin among you

i) Who is without sin?

ii) The scribes?

iii) The Pharisees?

b) Let him throw a stone at her first

i) The woman was guilty of sin

ii) Were the scribes and Pharisees guiltless?

c) Convicted by the Conscience

i) Of self-righteousness

ii) Of hypocrisy

iii) Of viciousness

iv) Of fault-finding

v) Of evil-intentions

 

NO CONDEMNATION

10 When Jesus had raised Himself up and saw no one but the woman, He said to her,

“Woman, where are those accusers of yours? Has no one condemned you?”

11 She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said to her, “Neither do I condemn you; go and sin no more.” John 8:10-11

1. Where are the accusers of yours?

2. Has no one condemned you?

3. The answer:

“No one, Lord”

4. A great word from the Lord Jesus

a) Neither do I condemn you

i) He had not come to the world to condemn

ii) He had come to the world to save

b) Go and sin no more

i) Grace and mercy were shown

ii) Love was given gently

iii) And a needed word of wisdom too

 

I AM THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD

Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world.

He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” John 8:12

1. The Lord Jesus resumed teaching the people

2. This incident allowed Him to teach great truths

a) Darkness

i) There is much darkness in the world

ii) Because of darkness people fall into sin

b) Light

i) Light is needed to dispel darkness

ii) The Lord Jesus is that Light of the world

c) Light of life

i) The Lord Jesus offers light

ii) He offers life

 

CONCLUSION

1. Much darkness exists in the world

2. The danger of darkness invading the heart

a) Finding fault

b) Condemnation

3. What we need

a) To find Light

b) To walk in the Light

c) To have the Lord Jesus as the Light of our life
