INTRODUCTION

1. The Anointing of the Messiah

The Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon Him,

The Spirit of wisdom and understanding,

The Spirit of counsel and might,

The Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD. Isaiah 11:2

2. This Prophecy was fulfilled

16 When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold,

the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him.

17 And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” Matthew 3:16-17

 

THE HOLY SPIRIT IN THE MINISTRY OF THE LORD JESUS

1. The leading of the Holy Spirit

Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. Matthew 4:1

Then Jesus, being filled with the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness. Luke 4:1

2. The Filling of the Holy Spirit

3. The Empowering of the Holy Spirit

Then Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee Luke 4:14

4. The Holy Spirit and Ministry

18 “The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me

To preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the broken-hearted,

To proclaim liberty to the captives. And recovery of sight to the blind,

To set at liberty those who are oppressed; 19 To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD.” Luke 4:18-19

 

THE PROMISE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

15 “If you love Me, keep My commandments.

16 And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever—

17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him;

but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. John 14:15-17 (Cf. John 15:26; 16:5-14)

1. The Lord Jesus will pray for the Holy Spirit to be given

2. He will be “another Helper”

3. He will abide forever

4. He will indwell every believer

 

THE DESCENT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

1 When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.

2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.

3 Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them.

4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. Acts 2:1-4

1. In one accord and in one place

2. All filled with the Holy Spirit

3. Blessed with a special spiritual gift

 

ANOTHER PROPHECY FULFILLED

28 “And it shall come to pass afterward that I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh;

Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your old men shall dream dreams,

Your young men shall see visions.

29 And also on My menservants and on My maidservants, I will pour out My Spirit in those days. Joel 2:28-29

c) His ministry is invaluable

d) His filling is to be sought

2. He is involved in every aspect of our life

a) Our Salvation

b) Our Life

c) Our Ministry

 

OUR CHALLENGE

1. To comprehend the Person of the Spirit of God

2. To Desire to be filled with the Spirit

3. To walk in the Spirit
