WEEKEND PASTORAL LETTER 8 August 2021

 

Dear Brethren,
MEDITATION
16  That He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with
might through His Spirit in the inner man,
17  That Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love,

 

OBSERVATION AND INTERPRETATION

1. That He would grant you

a) This is a prayer

i) It expresses a wish
ii) It also expresses a hope

b) A prayer goal

i) It is a hoped-for goal
ii) Much depends on whether God would grant it (To give it)

2. According to the riches of His glory

a) Drawing inspiration in prayer
b) Inspired by God’s glory
c) God’s glory described:

i) Riches
ii) Means “Greatness”

3. To be strengthened with might

a) This was the content of Paul’s hoped-for prayer request
b) That there may be strength and might

i) Strength is “power” Cf. Acts 1:8
ii) This is something God can give
iii) The word “strength” is associated with might
iv) This “might” points to God’s mighty deeds

4. Through His Spirit

a) This strength is possible
b) God’s Spirit is the means by which this strength can come

5. In the inner man

a) The external outer man

i) The body
ii) It is from our genes

b) The inner man

i) The spirit of a person
ii) The inner being

 

APPLICATION TO LIFE AND MINISTRY
1. Our prayers

a) Let us desire to learn how to pray better
b) Paul’s prayer

i) Instructive
ii) Insightful

2. Let us pray for inner man strength
May the Lord grant this inner man strength!
