WEEKEND PASTORAL LETTER 28 June 2020

Dear Brethren,
MEDITATION
6  For of this sort are those who creep into households and make
captives of gullible women loaded down with sins, led away by various
lusts,  7  always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the
truth.  8  Now as Jannes and Jambres resisted Moses, so do these also
resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, disapproved concerning the
faith;  9  but they will progress no further, for their folly will be manifest
to all, as theirs also was. 2 Timothy 3:6-9

OBSERVATION AND INTERPRETATION
1. The false teachers
a) They prey on gullible people
b) Especially women (many women in the old days were not well-educated)
c) Many women fell into sin when they are charmed by men

2. The knowledge of these false teachers
a) They may appear to know a lot
b) They appear to be learning
c) But they do not come to the knowledge of real truth
i) Having a degree or two does not mean possessing knowledge
ii) False reliance on theological degrees is dangerous

3. Examples cited
a) Jannes and Jambres are called “extra-biblical” examples
i) They may be well-known (folk-lore)
ii) But they are not recorded in the Scriptures
b) They were noted for their resistance to the truth

i) In the same way, the false teachers resist the truth as well
ii) Important to note people who resist the truth of God’s word

4. Further description of these false teachers
a) They are people whose minds are corrupt
b) With reference to faith in the Lord, they are not approved
c) They will not be able to proceed much further
d) Their foolishness would prove their downfall

APPLICATION TO LIFE AND MINISTRY
1. We need to be vigilant concerning threats to the Lord’s work
a) In the form of false teachers
b) In the form of false teachings

2. We need to have the following to resist them effectively:
a) Faith
b) Courage
c) Strength
d) Wisdom

3. Collectively as the Bethany Family of Churches
a) We need to be united in heart and spirit
b) We need to stand together and not allow anyone to cause disunity

4. Prayer
a) Let us pray much
b) Let us seek the Lord’s grace and mercy

Prayerfully,
Pastor Charles Tan
