WEEKEND PASTORAL LETTER 20 September 2020

 

Dear Brethren,

MEDITATION
6  If a man is blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not
accused of dissipation or insubordination.  7  For a bishop must be blameless, as a
steward of God, not self-willed, not quick-tempered, not given to wine, not violent,
not greedy for money, Titus 1:6-7

 

OBSERVATION AND INTERPRETATION

1. Appointment of people for ministry
a) The following criteria are to be noted
b) The kind of leaders we see in ministry would affect things significantly

2. List of good qualities
General qualities are described
a) Blameless
i) He is beyond reproach
ii) He is faithful in the discharging of all his duties
b) Family Life
i) He is faithfully married
ii) His children are also faithful
iii) They are not guilty of immorality
iv) They are not rude and rebellious (insubordinate)
c) A bishop
a) He is like a senior pastor
b) He supervises the Lord’s work carefully

d) Qualities of a good bishop
i) Blameless (same word as mentioned in v. 6
ii) A steward of God (he manages the church well)
iii) Not self-willed (stubbornness)
iv) Not quick-tempered (easily inclined to anger)
v) Not given to wine (addiction to wine is meant)
vi) Not violent (not a bully)
vii) Not greedy for money (worldliness)

 

APPLICATION TO LIFE AND MINISTRY
1. These are important qualities to cultivate
a) They do not come naturally
b) Sins must be dealt with decidedly
c) It takes much effort to cultivate these qualities
2. Qualities to encourage in all our leaders
a) Present
b) Future

 

OUR CHALLENGE
1. We must not lower the standards for anyone
2. We cannot afford to compromise when it comes to fulfilling God’s word
3. Our challenge is to encourage each other to live a blameless life
4. Let us pray that God would raise up good and godly leaders in the years ahead
