WEEKEND PASTORAL LETTER 20 December 2020

 

Dear Brethren,

MEDITATION
8  This is a faithful saying, and these things I want you to affirm constantly, that those
who have believed in God should be careful to maintain good works. These things are
good and profitable to men.
9  But avoid foolish disputes, genealogies, contentions, and strivings about the law; for
they are unprofitable and useless.  10  Reject a divisive man after the first and
second admonition,  11  knowing that such a person is warped and sinning, being self-
condemned.
Titus 3:8-11

 

OBSERVATION AND INTERPRETATION

1. This is a faithful saying

This truth is to be affirmed constantly.

a) Those who believe in God

i) By profession of faith
ii) By their conduct in life

b) Further evidence of faith

i) They must do good works
ii) They must maintain these good works

c) The value of these works

i) They are intrinsically good works
ii) They are profitable to all

2. Things and people to avoid

a) Things to avoid:

i) Foolish disputes

ii) Genealogies
iii) Contentions
iv) Strivings about the law
These are unprofitable and useless!

3. People to avoid

a) A divisive man
b) He may be given a chance to explain
c) But if he shows that:

i) He is warped
ii) Sinning
iii) Self-condemned

d) This person is to be rejected

 

APPLICATION TO LIFE AND MINISTRY

1. Our Ministry for the Lord

a) Much wisdom is needed
b) Much discernment

i) Concerning works
ii) Concerning people

2. Our response to what the Lord’s word teaches

a) Obedience
b) Faithfulness
