The Scriptures

You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me, yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life (John 5:39-40)

It is important that we know the role of the Scriptures as to our faith and life. Let us think through what Jesus has to teach us concerning the Scriptures, the holy writings.

You search the Scriptures…

  1. It is good to study the Scriptures
  2. It is noble to search the Scriptures
  3. Checking things against the Scriptures is a good practice honored (Acts 17:11)
    1. Jesus cited the Scriptures (Matt.4:1-11)
    2. The apostles cited the Scriptures (Acts 1-2)
  4. But the Scriptures do not provide us eternal life
    1. Biblicalism must be avoided
    2. It is a privilege for us to hear the voice of God in and through the Scriptures (the Words of God)

It is they that bear witness about me

  1. The Scriptures bear witness about Jesus (See, Luke 24:27, 44-46)
    1. The Pentateuch (the Law) testifies of Jesus the Messiah
    2. The Psalms bear witness concerning Jesus the Christ
    3. The Prophets in no less are indicating Jesus the Son of God
  2. They testify of what God has done in Christ Jesus
    1. Redemption
    2. Reconciliation
    3. Consummation
  3. They are the testimonies that Jesus is who He claims to be (John 14:6)
  4. They are to be taken heed, as we
    1. Are illuminated about Jesus (John 6:69)
    2. Are instructed to come to Jesus (John 6:45)

That you may have life

  1. “That” is a purpose indicator in this context
  2. We take heed to what the Scriptures say so that
    1. We may have life in Christ Jesus (John 1:4)
    2. We may have it abundantly in Jesus the Christ (John 10:10)
  3. This particular life promised and provided for in Christ Jesus is divine in nature (See also, 1 John 1:2-3)

Let us search the Scriptures and see Jesus clearer and better!
