As the Scriptures say… (44)

As the Scriptures say… (44)

The Risen Christ Jesus

Then the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; for as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that he must rise from the dead (John 20:8-9)

Then the other disciple

  1. The other disciple is the author John himself
  2. He was referred to as the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved (John 20:2, 3,4)
  3. John the author reached the tomb first, compared with Simon Peter
  4. John the author of this Gospel and Peter were eyewitnesses of the empty tomb of the Lord Jesus
  5. Both of them were the living proofs that Jesus actually rose from the dead

And he saw and believed

  1. What did John see?
  2. He must have seen what Mary Magdalene intimated to them
    1. The Lord indeed was taken away
    2. The tomb where the Lord was laid down was empty
  3. John must have believed what Mary Magdalene told them
  4. He must now believe that Jesus has risen from the dead

For as yet they did not understand the Scripture…

  1. The disciples of the Lord Jesus did not understand the meaning of the Scripture
    1. When it talks about the resurrection of the Lord Jesus (Ps. 16:10)
    2. As it intimates to us of the suffering of the Messiah (Isa. 53)
  2. The disciples were still struggling with their belief at that point of time
  3. The conjunction “as yet” indicates that there were times when the community of the faithful were unable to discern the meaning of the OT predictions as to the resurrection of the Messiah

He must rise from the dead

  1. Prophecies Fulfillments
    1. Genesis 3:15   Luke 24
    2. Number 21:6-9 John 20
    3. Psalm 16:9-11 Acts 2:22-36
    4. Isaiah 52:14-53

Jesus throughout His own life sought to fulfill what the Scripture says. He actually rose from the dead. John and Peter were first male eyewitnesses of the empty tomb as a proof that Jesus, as has already been predicted, rose from the dead. He then is the risen Lord!
