INTRODUCTION

1. Many deep spiritual lessons to be treasured

a) The benefits of God bestowed

b) The revelation of His power

c) The relationship with God that can be sustained

2. Some profound truths were elaborated upon

a) The Mercy of God

b) The greatness of His mercy

 

ATTEMPTING TO MEASURE THE GREATNESS OF GOD’S MERCY

For as the heavens are high above the earth,

So great is His mercy toward those who fear Him; Psalm 103:11

1. How high are the heavens above the earth?

a) Cannot be fully measured

b) Cannot be fathomed

2. So, the greatness of God’s mercy

a) To those who fear Him

b) To those who trust in Him

c) To those who love Him

d) To those who walk with Him

 

EXAMPLES OF GOD’S MERCY

1. Choosing of Jacob to become Israel

a) His personal life was terribly sinful

b) His twin brother wanted to kill him

c) Yet, God showed him great mercy

d) From him came the twelve tribes of Israel

2. Choosing Paul to become an Apostle

a) He was a blasphemer

b) He was a persecutor of the church

c) He was full of unbelief

d) Yet he became one of the foremost apostles of the Lord Jesus Christ

 

HOW GOD DEALS WITH OUR TRANSGRESSIONS

As far as the east is from the west,

So far has He removed our transgressions from us. Psalm 103:12

1. As far as the east is from the west

The east will never meet the west!

2. So far has God removed our transgressions from us

3. Many descriptions employed:

a) Forgiveness

b) Pardon

c) Cleansing

 

GOD’S RELATIONSHIP WITH US

As a father pities his children,

So the Lord pities those who fear Him. Psalm 103:13

1. As a father who pities his children

a) Who loves

b) Who cares and relates

c) Who takes a deep interest in their lives

2. God pities those who fear Him

a) He understands when we falter and fail

b) He understands when we sin and transgress

c) He understands when we are ignorant and sinful

3. The key word highlighted

a) That as God’s children we “fear” Him

b) There is reverence towards God

c) There is high regard for God

i) His word

ii) His house

iii) His will

iv) His people

 

THE SAD REALITY

“A son honors his father,

And a servant his master.

If then I am the Father,

Where is My honor?

And if I am a Master,

Where is My reverence?

Says the Lord of hosts

To you priests who despise My name.

Yet you say, ‘In what way have we despised Your name?’ Malachi 1:6

1. Where God is not honoured

2. Where God is not revered

3. Where God is despised!

 

CONCLUSION

1. Mercy is one of the attributes of God

2. It is promised to all who fear the Lord

3. The Mercy of God cannot be abused

4. If we comprehend the greatness of God’s mercy

We can proclaim “Bless the Lord, O my soul”

5. May we cultivate our fear of the Lord
