MORNING WORSHIP SERVICE 13 September 2026

Text: Psalm 3

Title: “He heard me from His holy hill”

INTRODUCTION

1. The Lord’s plan for sacred worship

16  “Three times a year all your males shall appear before the LORD your God in the place which He chooses: at the Feast of Unleavened

Bread, at the Feast of Weeks, and at the Feast of Tabernacles; and they shall not appear before the LORD empty-handed.

17  Every man shall give as he is able, according to the blessing of the LORD your God which He has given you.

Deuteronomy 16:16-17

 

Three Feasts to be held

i) Feast of Unleavened Bread (Passover)

ii) Feast of Weeks

iii) Feast of TabernaclesAll worshippers

i) They are to give as they are able, as they have been blessed!

ii) No one is to come to the Lord’s house empty-handed!

 

2. The Place that God would choose

This was not fully comprehended

This plan of God was not followed in the period of the Judges

This was discovered by David as he grew in faith and maturity

 

A PAINFUL EXPERIENCE

A Psalm of David when he fled from Absalom his son.

1  LORD, how they have increased who trouble me!

Many are they who rise up against me.

2  Many are they who say of me, “There is no help for him in God.”

Psalm 3:1-2

 

1. Historical Context

David was much older

His son Absalom whom he loved dearly had rebelled

He had to flee for his life

2. There were many who sided with Absalom

There were thousands of enemies

They too had turned against David

They did not believe that God would come to his rescue

 

FALLING BACK ON HIS FAITH IN GOD

3  But You, O LORD, are a shield for me, My glory and the One who lifts up my head.

4  I cried to the LORD with my voice, And He heard me from His holy hill.

5  I lay down and slept; I awoke, for the LORD sustained me.

6  I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people, Who have set themselves against me all around.

Psalm 3:3-6

 

1. David had a genuine faith in God

God had helped him defeat Goliath 1 Samuel 17

The Lord had protected him from King Saul 2 Samuel 22

 

2. David continued to exercise faith in God

That God was his shield

That He would be his glory

That He would lift up his face in honour and victory

 

DAVID’S PRAYER TO GOD

I cried to the LORD with my voice,

And He heard me from His holy hill.

Psalm 3:4

 

1. He cried to the Lord

This is a reference to prayer

Prayers were almost always oral

 

2. He believed

God had heard his cry for help

God was close by and not far away in heaven

He was in His holy hill

This was a reference to Mount Zion

This would be the Place that God had chosen

 

3. The Concept of a Sanctuary

This was growing in David

He began to cultivate a greater regard for the House of God

 

THE CITY OF A GREAT KING

A Song. A Psalm of the sons of Korah.

1 Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised In the city of our God, In His holy mountain.

2  Beautiful in elevation, The joy of the whole earth, Is Mount Zion on the sides of the north, The city of the great King.

3  God is in her palaces; He is known as her refuge.

12  Walk about Zion, And go all around her. Count her towers;

13  Mark well her bulwarks; Consider her palaces; That you may tell it to the generation following.

14  For this is God, Our God forever and ever; He will be our guide Even to death.

Psalm 48:1-3, 13-14

 

1. God is in His holy mountain

2. Mount Zion is the city of the great King

3. The Lord was their God

4. He will remain as the faithful God to the end of life
