As the Scriptures say…(19)

As the Scriptures say…(19)

The truth

And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free (John 8:32)

The question of truth is dealt with in the context of freedom it (the truth itself) entails. And it is of significance that truth has something to do with Jesus and his teaching.

You will know the truth

  1. Truth is knowable
  2. That truth cannot be known is to be rejected outright
  3. This knowledge of truth is a promised given to those of us
    1. Who believe in Jesus (John 8:31)
    2. Who accordingly abide in the word of Jesus (John 8:31)
    3. Who therefore are Jesus’ disciples (John 8:31)
  4. True disciples of Christ Jesus will surely know the truth

And the truth will set you free

  1. “The truth” refers to a body of truths
    1. Taught by Jesus
    2. Attested to by the Spirit of God
    3. Witnessed to by prophets and apostles
  2. The truth as a body of truths is
    1. That which is believed
    2. That which is abided by
    3. That which is followed through
  3. The truth as such
    1. Is at work in all aspects of life
    2. Manifests in all dimensions of life
    3. Sets us free from the power of Satan and Sin

THE KIND OF FREEDOM THE TRUTH PROVIDES INCLUDES

  1. Freedom from falsehood
  2. Freedom from deception
  3. Freedom from fear/insecurity
  4. Freedom from death (second death)

THE KIND OF PEOPLE WHO WILL UNDERSTAND THE TRUTH

  1. Only those who believe Jesus
  2. Only those who abide by the teaching of Jesus
  3. Only the true disciples of Jesus Christ

Truth and freedom (it brings about) are the two sides of the same coin. We cannot have one without the other. Only those who know the truth are truly free! They are free for authentic living before God and others.
