As the Scriptures say… (18)

As the Scriptures say… (18)

The authority of Jesus

So Jesus said to them, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he, and that I do nothing on my own authority, but speak just as the Father taught me (John 8:28)

There will come a time when the Jews will have Jesus crucified. Only after that event, many of them would come to have faith in Him as the Messiah (Acts 2:36-41).  This is precisely of what the Lord Jesus intimates to us in this text.

THE LIFTING UP OF THE SON OF MAN

  1. This is a reference to the crucifixion of the Lord Jesus Himself
  2. The term “Son of Man” is a messianic one Jesus chose to speak of Himself
  3. The Jews themselves will have Jesus crucified on the hill of Calvary

I am he

  1. Jesus is referring to Himself as the Messiah
  2. He is in fact saying that He is the Suffering Messiah of God (Isa.53)
  3. He being the Christ of God is to be honored above anyone else (Phil.2:9-11)
  4. The Jews would know that Jesus is the Messiah after His being killed by the hands of the Gentiles

I do nothing on my own authority

  1. Jesus being God’s Messiah has no authority except that delegated by His Father (John 5:27)
  2. The authority Jesus owns, after all is said and done,
    1. Derived
    2. Delegated, and c. eternally Designated one
  3. All that Jesus has done has the authority of God the Father as its basis

But speak just as the Father taught me

  1. God indeed taught His Messiah-servant (Isa. 50:4-7)
  2. Everything Jesus has uttered is the teaching of God His Father (John 7:16)
    1. He teaches what the Father taught Him
    2. He proclaims the will of the Father (John 7:17)
  3. No wonder that the words of Jesus are spirit and life (John 6:63)
    1. They are spirit because it is the Spirit of God who hovers over the formless earth speaks
    2. They are life because it is the living (eternal) God who utters everything into existence speaks
  4. We have all the teaching of God in the Lord Jesus
    1. Jesus has spoken to us of what God teaches
    2. God has finally spoken to us in and through His Son Jesus Christ (Heb.1:2)
